Record attendance and entries at the February 2017 Hay Show

The weather threw everything at us on the day - rain, wind, sleet and snow - but everyone had a great time and a record number of 50 bales were entered into the competition by local farmers. Over 150 pledges and donations poured in for the afternoon's charity auction. Visitors enjoyed stirring music from Rothbury's Highland Pipe Band, hot food and cheering drinks from our hosts at The Gate pub, and bid well over THREE THOUSAND POUNDS in total for the hay and pledges. Thanks to Hexham and Northern Mart and Hedley Heron for their support as ever with the auction, which was ably conducted by auctioneer Drew Patrick. Our knowledgeable and hardworking judges Lynsey Alison, Simon Bainbridge and George Graham picked the winners and overall champion John Cowens from Shilmoor was delighted with his prize and award cup.

As ever, people flocked to this unique and popular event. Everyone knows, said chairperson Jamie Whicker, that Simonside Fair and Hay Show exist principally to support Northumberland based charities and good causes. All of our profits every year go to these groups. So people are always keen to support our efforts. And we are really grateful to them for that, huge thanks are also due to all our volunteers and helpers, especially on a chilly February day like today!
